I adopted Jim in February 2004. He has been an awesome dog. I have people fighting over who gets to pet sit him when I travel and he can't come (I have family in Europe and go annually for several weeks). He did well in his obedience class, coming in first place, and getting his picture in the paper (and winning a Frisbee, which he loves). A child who was deathly afraid of dogs, especially big ones, somehow overcame her fear with Jimmy--it was the first dog she'd voluntarily approached and he was awesome, never moving while she was petting him even though we were on the farm, he was off leash, and there were a ton of horses/strangers around because of a horse show. What a dog!
A few months ago we were playing fetch as usual. Unfortunately somebody had thrown some glass or metal or something into the lawn behind the apartment complex and Jimmy cut his leg. It was bleeding pretty badly (scaring me to death!), but Jim just gave me the stick and waited for me to throw it again--he didn't think the game was over. He let me carry him upstairs (not easy--he's a big BC at almost 60 lbs) and bandage it without complaint. Then I carried him downstairs and took him to the vet. He let the vet and the techs inspect and clean the wound and never moved. I left him for minor surgery to fix him up. When I came back a few hours later the vet told me that he'd actually cut clear through his tendon! We didn't realize it because this injury is apparently so painful that even the sweetest dogs will get aggressive when you touch it. Jimmy didn't. He just let the vets do their job and never flinched, growled, struggled, never even moved! They had never seen any dog that well behaved with an injury that severe.
Jimmy is recovering well. He's almost completely healed, though he'll always have a slight limp/hitch in his gait. He's back to fetch and going with me when I ride my horse. The main thing is that he is still the same loving guy he always was.
I am proud to own such a stellar dog. He was at SEBCRL for a year and I can't believe nobody claimed him--but boy am I glad. Thanks for taking care of him for the year he was with you. Jimmy also recently had his first trip in an airplane, as I moved to Oregon from Georgia (I'm in grad school). He handled the move well and is loving it out here.
Best of luck placing all the cuties in forever homes!
Thanks, Janice & Jimmy Ketsche |
