Written by Jerri Carter Goodbye my darling Dixie.... My dear little rescue Shy Dixie died last night (2-10-03). She was 2.5 years old and came to our rescue in August from a puppy mill seizure. She was saved from death at the puppy mill, and was the only female in that seizure that was not pregnant. She had a terrible uterine infection and so was saved a second time with her spaying which saved her from death from the infection. She was terribly shy and stayed with me until she learned to trust people and learned that the people in her life were not going to hurt her nor neglect her any more. She finally got her new family the first week in January of 2003. She absolutely fell in love with Tammy, her new mom. She learned very quickly to trust her new Dad Joe too and she quickly became Joe's girl. Despite the minor adjustment problems that comes with a new dog, Dixie quickly settled into her new family and routine.
She freely accepted the extra love and attention and slowly began learning how to play with toys. She even caught the Frisbee a few times! This once forlorn little dog began to shine and the joy could be seen in her face. She loved to ride in the car and got to go on visits to PETsMART and the dog park. After living the first part of her life in total confinement in a Puppy Mill crate, she learned to enjoy freedom and the privileges of a much loved special pet.
Last night her human daddy took her out in an open area far away from traffic and let her romp and play with her best doggie brother Danny. When it was time to go back home, Dixie decided to run from her Daddy. Joe searched and searched for her and could not find her after hours of searching and calling. T his morning she was found just a few blocks from her home. She had been hit and killed by a car. While I am devastated about the loss, I am truly thankful that this little forlorn Border Collie got a chance to experience the love and joy of life during her short time with me and with Tammy and her husband. Goodbye my dear Dixie. Thank you God for letting me to be a part of Dixie's life even if so briefly. I will remember you always Dixie. |
