My wife woke up at 3:15 yesterday morning (31 March 05), and went out to feed our horses as usual.  When she arrived in the barn she noticed that our new stud colt (11 months old) was lying down and wouldn’t get up.  When I got there we determined that he was colicing, and was in real distress.  We got him up and I walked him some, to help relieve the stomach ache.  I decided to take him outside and let him walk in his front pasture.  I walked him for about 30 minutes and I had to in the house.  When I left him, to go in the house, he laid down again.  This time I had a hard time and he would not get up.  I was pulling and urging him to get up.  When Brodey saw what I was trying to do he came over and barked and nipped at the horses back legs until the horse got up and started walking again.  Brodey then went over to the edge of the fence and laid down typical Border Collie style, as if awaiting further orders from me.  His instinct told him what to do to help me save the horse’s life.  This is why I love the Border Collie breed so much.  They are the smartest of all dog breeds, I believe.

Thanks again for such a great dog!
